|Everton duo Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines backed to stay at Blues next season
| sbo888 Veteran Everton pair Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines have both been backed to earn themselves new contracts with the Blues. The stalwart duo who are the longest-serving duo currently on the playing staff at Goodison Park – having each arriving back in the summer of 2007 – have less than a year remaining on their respective current deals.
Club captain Jagielka, 36, joined from Sheffield United for £4million and is the second-oldest outfield player to have turned out in the Premier League this season after Brighton & Hove Albion's Spanish right-back Bruno, 38. He has made 379 appearances for Everton but has only played once so far this season having been sent off on the opening day of the campaign at Wolverhampton Wanderers and then picking up a knee injury.
Baines, 33, who became the club's most expensive defender when joining from Wigan Athletic for £6million, was also in the first XI for the start of the season. He has played 408 games for the Blues – sbo888 just 25 shy of matching Dixie Dean and Leon Osman for a spot in the club's all-time top 10 – but has recently lost his place in the side to summer recruit Lucas Digne.
Manager Marco Silva this week declared that “his two captains” still both have important roles to play at Goodison Park but insisted any talk over new deals could wait for the future. Despite the pair both being in their 12th season with the Blues, neither has yet been awarded a testimonial – often given after a decade of service – but fans have backed them to extend their stay at the club beyond next summer.
An ECHO poll of almost 3,000 participants at the time of publication found that 44% of fans believe that Jagielka and Baines should both have the contracts renewed for 2019/20. Some 37% reckon Baines deserves a new deal sbo888 but Jagielka doesn't while 18% think they should both be let go at the end of the season and only 1% of respondents would hand a fresh contract to Jagielka and not Baines.
